Speakers

Prabhu Rajan is currently Chief Counsel to the Chief Coroner for Ontario and Chief Forensic Pathologist.  Previously, he was the Legal Director for the Ministries of Education and Advanced Education and Skills Development, Deputy Legal Director at the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and Deputy Legal Director at the Ministry of Labour.

Prabhu commenced his OPS career as counsel at the Ontario Human Rights Commission and later as counsel at the Ministry of Labour, Crown Law Office – Civil and the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.  He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba (B.A. Criminology) and Osgoode Hall Law School. He articled at Cavalluzzo, Hayes, Shilton, McIntyre and Cornish and was called to the Bar in 1996.

 

Leola Pon is General Counsel (Acting) at the Toronto District School Board, Canada’s largest school board.  She leads a team of lawyers and staff who provide strategic legal advice on a wide range of areas of law including education, labour, real estate, municipal planning, corporate/commercial, governance and human rights.  Leola previously worked in the Toronto office of Hicks Morley Hamilton Stewart Storie LLP practising human resources law, and at the University of Toronto in both legal and non-legal roles.  Leola chose law as a second career and was called to the Bar in 2006. Outside of work, Leola plays volleyball and is interested in photography.

 

Sona Advani is the Acting Legal Director of the Civil Remedies for Illicit Activities Office with the Ministry of the Attorney General. Formerly an Assistant Crown Attorney with the Downtown Toronto office, she was called to the Bar in 1999.

She has been significantly involved with the South Asian Bar Association of Toronto (SABA) and its initiatives for many years, including: event planning, mentorship, law school liaison, and promoting diversity on the bench.

In her spare time, Sona teaches at various advocacy programmes and volunteers with the Canadian Cancer Society.

 

Falguni Debnath is senior counsel at the Department of Justice where her practice focuses on constitutional and administrative law. She is the former Deputy Regional Director General of the Ontario Regional Office in which capacity she supported the work of 350 lawyers and 150 support staff in addition to having responsibility for a dedicated team in the area of extradition and mutual legal assistance. Representing the Department of Justice overseas, she was the Country Director of a multi-million dollar law reform project in Asia which focused on reform of the criminal justice system and legislative drafting. She was also the Senior Assistant Prosecutor for the UN at the United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials in Cambodia.
