Social Justice Advocacy

While anti-Asian racism has become front and centre in recent years in light of rising incidents of hate and discrimination, its origins can be traced to deep historical roots. Our panelists will reflect upon historical efforts to combat anti-Asian racism such as the Chinese Head Tax Redress. They will also discuss how current challenges faced by Asian Canadian communities such as police reporting and COVID related racism, are being tackled and the ways in which we can mobilize in the future.

PANEL A: R v Morris - Anti-Black Racism in Criminal Sentencing
In October 2021, the Court of Appeal for Ontario released its highly anticipated decision in R. v. Morris. The case considers the manner in which trial judges should assess anti-black racism in the sentencing context including the use of “enhanced pre-sentence reports” for black offenders. This panel will discuss the Court’s recent decision in R. v. Morris and its potential applications to other POC defendants.
