TORONTO, December 2, 2016 –
Today, the Law Society of Upper Canada (“LSUC”) held its Convocation voting on the Working Together for Change: Strategies to Address Issues of Systemic Racism in the Legal Professions (the “Report“)
After a long day of charged and emotional debate from Benchers representing all corners of the province, the Law Society voted to implement all 13 recommendations of the Report.
We applaud the LSUC for taking this historic first step to address racism in the legal profession. We thank all of the Benchers for their heartfelt engagement with this issue. We are grateful to the Challenges Faces by Racialized Licensees Working Group for its leadership and thoughtful work bringing this Report to Convocation, in particular the contributions of FACL founding member and former director, Bencher Avvy GO, and former FACL Director, Bencher Sandra Nishikawa.
We look forward to continuing to work with the LSUC to build a diverse and inclusive profession, for a more diverse and inclusive Canada.
