TORONTO – On Saturday, September 27th, the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL) is proud to present BREAKTHROUGH!: SHATTERING BARRIERS AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES, the largest conference and gala the organization has ever hosted.

The keynote speaker will be Judge Denny Chin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The conference is exceptional since it will also serve as the annual North Eastern Regional Conference for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA), marking the first-ever NAPABA event hosted outside of the United States. FACL is affiliated with NAPABA, which represents the interests of approximately 40,000 Asian Pacific American lawyers.

The 2014 FACL Awards for exemplary service and accomplishments will presented to recipients including 2014 Order of Canada recipient Constance Sugiyama at the gala following the conference.

Substantive content at the conference will include high-profile panelists from Canada and the U.S. presenting on:

• Diversity within the legal profession
• The evolution of the law firm model
• Launching a legal career
• Righting historic wrongs committed against minorities
• Cross border class actions
• Current issues facing immigration, multiculturalism and human rights lawyers
• Current issues facing lawyers in the role of General Counsel
• Challenges in the fight for access to justice
• The personal experiences of racialized judges

TORONTO – The Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers (FACL) has selected the recipients of the 2014 FACL Awards. The FACL Awards recognize talented individuals in the Pan-Asian Canadian community who have demonstrated excellence in their field while maintaining a strong commitment to community service.The Awards will be presented on September 27, 2014 at the combined FACL/National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Gala at the Sheraton Centre Hotel in Toronto, to the following recipients:

Edward Hung (posthumous) – Lifetime Achievement
Constance L. Sugiyama* – Lawyer of Distinction
Kenneth Jim – Young Lawyer of the Year
Jason Tam – Social Justice Award
Gary Yee – Daniel Mark Public Sector Award
Ernest Tuckett – Corporate Diversity and Leadership Award

The 2014 honourees continue the FACL legacy of excellence and leadership in both the legal and pan-Asian Canadian communities. This year’s honourees have vast and varied experiences from leading the largest national law firms, trying and winning major cases, representing Fortune 500 companies, and tirelessly advocating to protect the civil rights of under-represented Canadians of all backgrounds. FACL congratulates each of the 2014 winners and looks forward to their ongoing successes!
